Hello, my name is Art, I’m fairly new to working-out and would like information on diet and exercise routines. I’ve played around in the gym for years but have never really produced real results. After working out for a month or two I find all the weightlifting machines uninteresting to work with. So I would like to try power-lifting. It seems straight forward and to the point. As for the diet go’s the last one that I tried was the low-card aka Adkins. It worked well about 1 pound per day loss but my blood sugar level dropped to 44, so that wasn’t good. I’m 52 years old 5’6” 264LBS. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

High protein, low carb diets are generally not very good for you. Your body requires a balanced diet, this not only refers to the types of food that you consume but also the ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat. The Paleolithic diet and the Zone diet are both practical and healthy alternatives. The Paleolithic diet targets the types of food (and drink) that you ingest, whilst the Zone diet provides an optimal guide to the percentages of protein, carbohydrates and fat that should be consumed, dependant on your age, weight, physical activity and goals. It also provides information on how to break your meals up across the day to maintain your insulin levels within the 'normal' range. This being said, I would also recommend that you consult your doctor or a dietitian prior to commencing any drastic dietary change. Explain your goals to him or her so that they understand why you want to change the way that you are eating. I also recommend reading a couple of books. Enter The Zone by Barry Sears PhD. and The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain PhD. Most general physicians are not fully conversant with current dietary data so reading these books prior will help you understand and convey why you want to change your diet for the better.
