The upper back, or Lats ("Latissimus Dorsi"), are the large, V-shaped muscle located on the rear of the trunk (back).

The lats are trained primarily through pulling movements such as Pull-ups and Rowing. However, other compound exercises such as Deadlifts will also involve the lats.

The upper and middle back muscles will also act as an actagonist to pressing movements such as the Bench Press and Military Press.
