The hamstring muscles are located on the back of the leg, between the knee and glutes (buttocks). They are
comprised of 3 major muscles - Biceps Femoris, Semimembranosus and Semitendinosus.
The hamstrings have 2 major functions:
-
Extension (straightening) of the hip;
-
Flexion (bending) of the knee
The hamstrings are extremely important to lower body function, both in terms of daily and athletic activity.
They are often neglected in favour of the Quadriceps muscle group.
The hamstrings may targeted by isolation, or as part of compound exercises such as the Deadlift. Ideally, a well-rounded
exercise regime should include both.
